Creating a Clearer Digital Path to Guidance, Resources, and Community

Keystone Ability Support is a family-centered support platform designed for parents and caregivers of children with special needs. The website brings advocacy, individualized assessments, resource coordination, support groups, parent workshops, events, educational guides, and community resources into one accessible digital experience. The redesign focused on reducing the stress families experience when navigating fragmented support systems and helping them find trusted information, relevant services, and practical next steps with greater confidence.

Context

Simplifying a Complex and Emotional Support Journey

Families supporting children with special needs often navigate multiple disconnected systems. Special education, therapy, medical support, government programs, community services, events, and advocacy resources may all exist in different places. This makes it difficult for parents to understand what help is available, which service is relevant, and what they should do next. Keystone Ability Support needed a digital experience that could bring these resources together while remaining calm, inclusive, and easy to understand.

Goal

Creating One Trusted Destination for Family Support

The primary goal was to design a platform that helps families move from uncertainty to informed action. The website needed to help users:

Understand available services
Identify the support most relevant to their child
Access advocacy and assessment guidance
Discover workshops, events, and support groups
Download practical guides and toolkits
Connect with other families

The Challenge

Designing for Users Who May Already Feel Overwhelmed

Parents often arrive while managing emotional stress, time pressure, unfamiliar terminology, and uncertainty about their child's future. The interface therefore needed to do more than look professional. It needed to reduce anxiety, explain services clearly, and make each next step obvious. The project identified three central challenges:

Fragmented Information

Families had to search across different platforms for educational, medical, therapeutic, and community support.

Repetitive and Confusing Processes

Parents frequently encountered repeated intake forms and unclear requirements across multiple providers.

Generic Guidance

Broad recommendations often failed to reflect each child's individual needs, leaving families uncertain about which action to take.

Research and Discovery

Understanding the Needs Behind Every Decision

The research phase used interviews and usability exploration to understand the experiences of families, educators, and support professionals. The project documentation records:

560 Regular Users

Existing users helped reveal recurring behavioral patterns.

24 Interviews Conducted

Interviews explored real challenges, expectations, and support needs.

5 New Features Implemented

Research findings shaped new functionality and content pathways.

Accessibility and Responsive Design

Accessibility was central to the redesign. The interface uses clear contrast, readable typography, visible calls to action, large interaction targets, structured headings, and consistent components. Responsive layouts ensure that services, events, resources, forms, and account features remain usable across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. The accessibility control visible throughout the designs provides an additional entry point for users who need interface adjustments.

A Compassionate Identity Built Around Family Empowerment

Keystone's identity was shaped to feel trustworthy, supportive, and human. The visual experience combines family-centered photography, warm accent colors, accessible typography, and structured layouts that make complex information feel manageable. The branding avoids presenting families through a clinical lens. Instead, it focuses on ability, progress, connection, and shared support.
